Traditional Timber Framing Course, Sept. 12-18

There will be a Traditional Timber Framing Course, Sept. 12-18, presented by the UK Carpenters’ Fellowship and the Essex County Council at Cressing Temple, near Braintree, Essex. In addition, there will be a one-day Introduction to Hewing and Raising workshop presented on Friday, Sept. 19.

Cressing Temple has a unique place in timber framing. The Knights Templar, a monastic order of warrior monks who defended the pilgrimage routes through Europe to the Holy Land, established a great estate at Cressing in 1137. Templar carpenters designed and erected the Barley Barn in 1200 and the Wheat Barn in 1250, now the oldest and largest surviving timber framed medieval barns in Europe.
